Collagen - what is it and why is it so important for our body?
Collagen is the most represented protein in the body, as it represents as much as 30% of all proteins. It is found in skin, bones, hair, nails, muscles and cartilage. Connective tissue cells, fibroblasts, are the ones that naturally produce and maintain it. These form an important framework that provides structure and strength to the body.
The word collagen comes from the Greek word “kólla” and translates to glue. The word perfectly illustrates the role of collagen in the body, which acts as the glue that holds everything together and keeps the body functioning as it should.
We know different types of collagen. In the body, among other things, we find:
- Type 1 – has dense fibers and makes up most of the collagen in the body. It is found in bones, tendons, cartilage, skin structure, teeth and connective tissues
- Type 2 – located in elastic cartilage.
- Type 3 – found in the structure of vessels, organs, intestines and muscles
- Type 4 – is present in individual layers of the skin.
- Type 5 Which is present in hair.
THE VALUE OF COLLAGEN DECREASES OVER THE YEARS
After the age of 20, the body produces 1% less collagen every year, as the function of fibroblasts weakens and, as a result, its production slows down.
