Collagen - what is it and why is it so important for our body?
Collagen is the most represented protein in the body, as it represents as much as 30% of all proteins. It is found in skin, bones, hair, nails, muscles and cartilage. Connective tissue cells, fibroblasts, are the ones that naturally produce and maintain it. These form an important framework that provides structure and strength to the body.
The word collagen comes from the Greek word “kólla” and translates to glue. The word perfectly illustrates the role of collagen in the body, which acts as the glue that holds everything together and keeps the body functioning as it should.
We know different types of collagen. In the body, among other things, we find:
